It was common I would receive a note from a doctor to schedule a follow up appointment for a patient with "an external _ specialist" and expected to know the providers and locations that certain specialized conditions could be seen, as well as what insurances they take. PSRs are expected to know a lot of medical terminology/multiple names for one condition and common symptom relations with zero medical or anatomy training for the job. If you need to use the restroom or are called into a manager meeting, that time comes out of the time you are allotted for breaks. Time off of the phones is consistently monitored by management. My department was consistently understaffed, almost to the point of being inoperable, so the phones rang for eight hours straight.
